Textiles

Early Influence

Margaret Morgan aged 21
It is surprising that early training influences certain things in your life. My grandmother was a dressmaker. Here she is, at about the age of 16 or 18. Aparently by the age of 21 she had her own dressmaking business and was training apprentices. She was quite a major influence in my life. By the time that I was born, she had retired, but she still made some clothes for me, and my dolls, and taught me to use a sewing machine. In fact, I can't remember learning to sew it seems like I could instinctively do it, but I am sure that it took many hours of practice encouraged by "Ma".

I studied textiles in Leicester Polytechnic learning printing and dyeing, but my main subject was weaving. I developed the skills and techniques learnt at Leicester and applied them to creating objects and tapestries as an art form rather than fabric.

I love texture, colour and shinyness. The most recent tapestries are made from an assortment of thread and fabric scraps that would otherwise have ended up in landfill.
